This woodcut depicts the marshes of Seney National Wildlife Refuge. It has 13 colors printed using two blocks. The marshes of Seney are a large part of its 95,000 acres and an important part of its ecosystem.
After a life-long experience as a do-it-yourselfer and woodworker, making practical items like furniture and toys, in 2012 Ben took a weekend workshop in woodblock printing at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota, with artist Nick Wroblewski. After that initial experience he has continued to learn new skills as a woodcut artist, taking his creative energies as a retired pastor into new artistic directions. More recently Ben has studied drawing and painting at Northern Michigan University and is a member of Lake Superior Art Association.
