This woodcut is 8 by 11 inches using 7 colors and 2 blocks. The Sand Point Light in Escanaba is a picturesque place, marking the east end of Ludington Street and the shoreline of Lake Michigan. It's one of those many favorite lighthouses that represent a glorious and important past, no longer necessary but still fun to visit.
After a life-long experience as a do-it-yourselfer and woodworker, making practical items like furniture and toys, in 2012 Ben took a weekend workshop in woodblock printing at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota, with artist Nick Wroblewski. After that initial experience he has continued to learn new skills as a woodcut artist, taking his creative energies as a retired pastor into new artistic directions. More recently Ben has studied drawing and painting at Northern Michigan University and is a member of Lake Superior Art Association.
