An original hand pulled reduction woodcut, this piece of art came together layer by layer, color by color, in the same way as my other woodcuts. As I worked I thought about the nature of what it means to be a community, a family, a nation, even a world. Here I see identity, diversity, complementariness, boundaries, fluidity, cohesiveness, respect, and much more. You may see something else and that's just as good!
After a life-long experience as a do-it-yourselfer and woodworker, making practical items like furniture and toys, in 2012 Ben took a weekend workshop in woodblock printing at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minnesota, with artist Nick Wroblewski. After that initial experience he has continued to learn new skills as a woodcut artist, taking his creative energies as a retired pastor into new artistic directions. More recently Ben has studied drawing and painting at Northern Michigan University and is a member of Lake Superior Art Association.
